KINDER® TEAMS UP WITH TREAT ACCESSIBLY TO BRING MORE AWARENESS OF INCLUSIVE TRICK-OR-TREATING THIS HALLOWEEN

Canadians can show support for children with disabilities by displaying Treat Accessibly lawn flags and creating accessible treat stations

September 21, 2021

Today, Kinder® announced its partnership with Treat Accessibly, a grassroots organization dedicated to accessible trick-or-treating for children. To bring awareness and help make the time-honoured Halloween tradition more inclusive for Canadian children with disabilities, Kinder will support this year’s campaign with special in-store displays and digital media support.

“Kinder is all about celebrating special family moments, where joy and happiness are part of a child’s growth,” said Laura MacCarthy, Marketing Director, Kinder. “We believe every child deserves the same opportunities and we’re committed to working with Treat Accessibly to ensure trick-or-treating is accessible to all Canadian children this year and every Halloween to come.”

In 2017, Siena Padulo, and her parents, Rich and Natasha, put a sign on their lawn to let a neighbourhood child in a wheelchair know he could trick-or-treat at their home without obstacle. Wanting to bring that joy to others, they founded Treat Accessibly and made the commitment to have trick-or-treating an event every child could participate in and enjoy.

Canadian families who want to provide accessible trick-or-treating in their neighbourhood can do so by placing a Treat Accessibly sign on their lawn in the weeks leading up to Halloween. The sign lets parents and children know that the house will have a treat-giving station in an accessible spot, such as curbside or on their driveway. This eliminates stairs and/or other barriers to those with disabilities trying to get to a front door.

Kinder is supporting Treat Accessibly in-store and with social media to increase awareness and invite Canadians to join the inclusivity movement. Special Halloween-themed displays with Treat Accessibly toppers, side panels and tear pads will be placed in grocery stores across the country. Additionally, Canadians can pick up a free Treat Accessibly lawn flag at Kinder displays in select Sobeys stores in Ontario, Quebec and Atlantic Canada while supplies last or visit https://www.treataccessibly.com/ to print their own sign.

“There are more than 400,000 children in Canada who identify with having a disability that may prevent them from participating in Halloween,” said Rich Padulo, founder, Treat Accessibly. “We’re excited to partner with Kinder to not only share our message, but to make our flags more widely available to families across the country and help us reach our goal of having more than 100,000 homes participating this year.”
